I went past this today and noticed there didn't appear to be any wires running to the bracket. Considering the streetview pictures were taken last summer I assume it must have been forgotten about. If a collector wants it what would a pair of ladders and some tools to unbolt it sound like, perhaps at 2am

Pretty OK providing that you don't get caught, also carry a bin liner with you as you can drape this over the Beta 79 to mask any light spillage coming into contact with you.

Or you could try the more sensible option of phoning the appropriate council and asking for permission to have the lantern? Then, in the future, it may be easier for you to obtain permission to have other old lanterns they may have that are no longer in service  :)

Best to go down the proper routes, otherwise it's theft.

I agree.

There's loads i'd like to save but it's finding out who owns them and the land they're on.

The bracket is similar to an ESLA 1514 - but the detailing, such as the finial, is different.

The lantern looks like an ELECO Baldock MK III.

I suspect its been left because either:
1. The council forgot about it.
2. The distance to the telegraph pole to the road, and the fact that the lantern is situated on a bend, made removal difficult and/or dangerous.
3. Because its mounted to a pole, the lantern is technically the property of the electricity company who owns the pole, and so the council have just left them to deal with it.

Cambridgeshire County Council often use (3) - there are several pole mounted brackets just left in-situ.

All the best,
Simon

What a bracket! and the lantern seems to have the Bombproof bowl too.

Probably not the best idea to go grabbig it with a pair of ladders in the middle of the night!!  if they're on patches of land that have been derelict for years on end (with the site owner unknown) is one thing - on a busy(ish) road next to an in-service column is quite another!

I posted the picture of the bracket here so that anyone who's interested in it can ring whoever owns the pole/road and try and save it for preservation. It's too good just to let it rot away like that.
