Yes I was thinking about Murton too! I don't know if or when the service will be transferred across though. The pictured example, number 2, has a feed going into the control box that comes straight off the overhead cable - but number one has a cable come out of the pole bracket box that goes nowhere.

I had also wondered about Micklegate bar... I think it was even you I said it too: "those wall brackets look much older than the ZX3's, I wonder what was original to them" or something along that line.

Bubwith still clings on to its Humberside days, because of the generic row of the Geared MA90 on 'motorway style' columns.

So, they go all the way through the village then... because I'm used to seeing them at the crossroads with the B1228. Bubwith still has a few old style MI70's too.

Down the road at North Howden is this - formerly a familiar sight in York (now a familiar sight in my cabin!), a Z8691 is not exactly common outside York which is why this is a little bit special

as an aside, I've spotted a HullTrains Adelante
http://www.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source ... 04628&z=14
As you go away from the station and look back, it's still there.

MURTON, and I checked number 1 and 2 (the abandoned tungsten lanterns) and everything is still dark. Whoever should be transferring the service to the Thorn Jets really needs a boot up their bum! I did try and take a couple of pictures, but they haven't come up too well. If I took my binoculars out there during the day a couple of times, I may be able to work out if the timeswitch is still ticking away.

Well, tomorrow's a new week and may see out the last mercury that isn't 'locked' to a top entry concrete column here in York.
The Holgate terraces have been done, and so this leaves New Earswick and the city centre to do: which includes Lendal Bridge, one in Marygate, one under Bootham Bar (and also under Monk Bar if bulkheads are being done too), one in Fetter Lane, one in Church Street (off Ousegate), two in Wolfs Yard (off Walmgate), some in a patch behind Piccadilly, one or two in the Aldwark/St Andrewgate area including Battle Garth, two down Shambles, and that's about it for the centre - there's one at Bad Bargain Lane where Meadlands comes out, and another one just off Woodlands Grove in Heworth, and two Elecos in Windsor Drive in Haxby.

However, I am wondering about the double bracket on Lendal Bridge. It is a fancy bracket that may be of AC Ford manufacture, but I am not totally sure how it attaches to the column or if it's welded in place. Why I wonder about this is because the bracket has fancy curly bits and scrollwork which would make fitting a Jet on either end impossible without removing the scrolls, which would then compromise the structural integrity of the bracket. I just hope that it does detach from the column and that a new 'heritage' bracket has been made and is ready for installation.

The lanterns are GEC Z5580's, so probably don't have refractors inside.

Yeah sure... If it's only little stuff coming down then I'll be ok with the box - but if that bracket, or any globes or other large lights come down then I may need your assistance........

Looks like that the fancy scrolled bracket is welded to the rest of the column. So the only way that a couple of Jets could be installed is by decapitating the bracket off and installing a new 'heritage' bracket.

The Z5590's down the Shambles will be fun to replace as the street is way narrow, I do have a video saved on me other computer but it takes an age to load as I have 'taped' the Z5590 and its 'control' box. There is also an other Z5590 near to the Minster but it has been clipped by a tall vehicle I wonder if that is being replaced too.

In Cleckheaton, at the temporarily removed Whitechapel Road Bridge a couple of PL-L Lanterns (forgot what the were called) were brand new these have probably since been skipped after 8 weeks when GSV went by. The rest of the columns and lanterns on the 'Scholes' side still remain untouched.

Well it was a no show today. I remembered one road that had been lit by mercury, but it had Jets fitted when I checked by it today.
I'm hoping this week sees some action, because it really is just dribs and drabs left now - and could probably be done in 2 or 3 days (excluding New earswick, which will be 2 days in itself).
The problem now is the nature of what is left:
- New Earswick is on hold, pending the go ahead from Joseph Rowntree association who actually 'own' the rest of the remaining mercury lanterns there
- Lendal Bridge might be held up depending on what is being done with that double bracket
- There are some other lanterns to be replaced where the supply for them is unknown and the post top adaptor for the Jets is too big for the top of the columns (probably could be got around by using swan necks)
- The ones around Aldwark/St Andrewgate and Shambles area could be SON lanterns with screwcap mercury lamps fitted, and so replacement is not certain for these
- The one in Church Street (or Church lane, something like that) just off Ousegate is on a really narrow lane, and the lantern itself is right on the corner of this lane and one of the busiest streets in the city centre
... And so that leaves the ones off Walmgate, the forgotten one in Fetter Lane (and the abandoned one in the next street), one in Marygate, two in Heworth, possibly two in Haxby, abandoned ones in Lincoln Street. Tomorrow I may also check the heworth and haxby ones - but on wednesday/thursday I'm thinking it may be an idea to check Wheldrake.

New columns have been planted in Doriam Drive, Huntington. These are 6m columns sporting QSS's, and are replacing primarily 1970's/80's stanton concretes with GEC 'nightwatch' type lanterns. The oldest one there is a chunky-based Stanton (like in Wheldrake) with a top entry GEC Z9538 metal canopy lantern fitted. The Eleco Ware mk3's in Firwood Whin are still going strong with no replacement columns as yet.

Well, I've been trying to find some archive images of Murton Lane - to see if those old Open lanterns would appear. Sadly, there seems to be no photos at all - and is not helped because there is actually another place called Murton/Murton Lane and was a railway station, just like the York one! Murton Lane used to have a level crossing as part of the Derwent Valley light Railway (a route that operated from Layerthorpe in York to Cliffe Common near Selby, via Tang Hall, Osbaldwick, Murton, Dunnington, Elvington (now the airfield area), Wheldrake, Thorganby, Skipwith... and then I lose track) and the DVLR itself connected with the Foss Islands branch line that went from the scarborough line 'burton lane' junction (where the B1363 wigginton road and Crichton Avenue join) to Foss Islands Road, via the Rowntrees factory. The Foss Islands Branch is now a cycle track, as is part of the DVLR from Foss Islands to Osbaldwick.

Anyway, it is my belief that the Open lanterns at Murton were used to illuminate the roadway on the approach to the level crossing - and so when the railway closed in the 1980's, the lanterns were never serviced thereafter. Should this be the case, the tungsten lamp that can be seen in lantern #2 is getting on for 30 years old.

For those interested, here's the original route timetable for the DVLR
http://www.dvlr.org.uk/DVLRtimetable.htm

And this is the water tower at the Foss Islands terminus. The scene is unrecogniseable today, although that house on the far right of the picture by the water tower still exists. The bridge behind the wood shed (with the gas tower in the backgound) existed until about 3-5 years ago.
http://www.dvlr.org.uk/H1.htm
and another view, in colour from 1984. the line that curves away to the left is the exact line that the cycle path now follows after it crosses the re-routed Hallfield Lane. the two arrow-straight lines originally went to sidings that supplied various industrial places, including the Incinerator (now the site of Morrisons, but the old chimney still stands proud) and york's power station (there used to be a cooling tower on what is now government offices called Kings Pool - or it was until some local nicked the 'L' from the name sign outside the entrance!).
The funny thing is, looking at this picture, I can actually remember this scene! It stayed with these rail lines in place for a few years until the mid-late 1990's - the cycle path only went to Hallfield Road, and then you had to cycle along the roads through 5th avenue and onto the converted DVLR section a few hundred yards further up. After the tracks were pulled, this area just remained a boggy area of ash and ballast mixed in - and for a while was a playground for chavs with motorbikes.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79893903@N ... otostream/

an aerial view of the Murton Lane area - less than a mile of the original rail route has been preserved, but sadly does not include the Murton Lane level crossing. if you follow the line of the railway over the road, you will see a telegraph pole that would have originally stood on the 'murton side' of the level crossing - this is where open lantern #2 is situated

osbaldwick siding, and I see an old fluorescent platform lantern

Other rail-related pics worth a look....
Strensall (north) level crossing, with an old DMU. This is the level crossing you get to if you go up Flaxton Lane for a while.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3284950195/

Bootham signalbox. this stood at the east end of the level crossing with the B1363 wigginton road. if you look to the back of the train, you can see a line diverge off to the right - this was the start of the route to Beverley via Huntington, Stamford Bridge, Pocklington and Market Weighton
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3284937705/
the signalbox
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3285732944/

Burton Lane signalbox. This stood at the end of Field Lane, which comes off Burton Stone Lane. Basically, all the buildings except the signalbox are still standing. this box controlled access to the foss islands branch, and by extension the DVLR i it was used for trains to selby on a divert route...
But what is the post top lantern in the background (between the signalbox and the sewer pipe)?? nowadays, a WRTL 2000 stands there.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3284632702/

Haxby Road signalbox. This was on the road to New Earswick. the scene today is very different, as it is now a mini-roundabout (where I got knocked off my bike by somebody who didn't know how to properly look right). the trees and fields in the background have gone, as houses were built when the village was extended. If you want to see crossing gates like this in use, then go to Redcar.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3284621682/

Haxby signalbox, Towthorpe Road. This is at the north end of Haxby, and the fuel garage behind the signal box still stands, as do most of the houses. And that's a rather nice Eleco Way HW828 lantern in show too! (even if that had survived until recently, it would now have a Jet on the end. In reality though I believe it has a WRTL 200 on it)

Selby Swingbridge, with a high river level.... this was back in the days that Selby was part of the east coast main line

... and the only reason for me linking to this picture is the sheer comedy value of the name!

old york pics.
Walmgate bar, and there are 2 gas lanterns in view

Monk Bar in 1955. Just above the signpost for the A19 (where the watermark is, bottom right) you can see a wall bracket with a lantern of some description fitted. Note the abscence of wall mounted lanterns by the Monk Bar itself. two lanterns would be installed (both on the pub wall to the left, and on a building to the right of the bar) on wall brackets about 5 years later - which I now know were GEC Z8432's (or whatever it is I have). I do have a later picture of Monk Bar with said lanterns installed

pictures are from this page, if they are not loading

FInally, a now outdated image. this is Claygate, Ashley Park area of Heworth.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79893903@N00/4392224474/
That metal canopied GEC Z5670 has long gone, and now a Jet stands there. I do have 4 full metal top Z5670's with an additional 4 metal canopies, so there is the off chance that this lantern is oen that I have saved (either in whole or in part).... I'm going to go with the outcome that I have saved this lantern, as it just feels nice!

A bit of a blast to the past, in Brighouse there is, what I believe is Calderdale’s last geared Gamma 6. and as far as I'm aware it still works. The canopy is a bit bent like but its still battling on a bit.

In the subway adjacent is some of the older looking tunnel lanterns (there is also another subway a bit further up with them too), I know that they had them on the Leeds Inner Ring Road about 12 years back before the stretch was replaced. There are like the ones found in Castleford Bus Station.

There is also some more Gamma 6's in Clifton these do appear to be original to the road. There is also quite a few sleeved columns up there because of the exposed hillside between the village green and the A643, the last time I popped up some were day burning.
